And, if you're using it as an argument against the fact that countries that build nuclear bombs figure out they cannot use them, your argument is completely flawed. First of all, it does not take advanced technology to fly an airplane into a building. Anyone can do it. No country's resources are strained engaging in such an attack. The planning and execution of such an event can be done nearly in secret and almost carried out on a whim. If a government were truly behind such an attack they might expect a conventional weapon response but not nuclear annihilation so the deterrent factor is simply not there.
Many predicted such an attack including Tom Clancy who wrote a chapter to a book years before the event in which an attacker destroyed the Capitol Building by flying a 747 into it. Months before the 9/11 attack, the NATO nations put up anti-aircraft guns around a G8 Summit meeting because of threats of planes flying into it. Numerous FBI agents were highly suspicious of some of the perpetrators and predicted they were training to attack by air. It wasn't like we were unaware the towers were a target for Al Quaida.
I just don't understand why you feel you are more safe because George Bush spies without a search warrant provided by a secret court that was designed just for this type of purpose. Why did Bush need to sidestep the process and defy the law? The warrants could easily be obtained after the fact if they had validity and no record seems to exist that they were ever denied. His defiance of the law seems to have only one explanation and that's to prevent anyone but his administration from knowing the targets. Does he believe the FISA court to be security risks? That's a real stretch considering they were hand picked for their discretion in the first place. It not surprising that the suspicion is there that the targets are more political than anything else.
I'm afraid that nobody has absolute security from small bands of terrorists. You can get lucky and stumble across a plot but it's not very hard for those bands to stay below the radar. Communications can simply be hand delivered by courier. If we haven't been hit by attack since 9/11 it's probably by design.
Just do this exercise. Imagine yourself a lone suicidal terrorist in Mexico. The border is absolutely porous and all you have to do is walk across with the thousands of illegals that cross every day and deliver explosives to a target. The targets are so numerous that no government can provide protection to them all so all you have to do is pick one that people wouldn't expect, a school, a shopping mall, a bus. There are no communications necessary that the govt. could intercept. Al Quaida could've done this scenario hundreds of times by now and yet they've been in wait. If Bush is this feared adversary wouldn't it have been in their best interest to embarrass him often and show his flaws? It's my contention that they have their man, the guy that will always walk into their traps. If my theory is correct the attacks are waiting for times when Bush is showing major weakness politically. They'll be spectacular events designed to put fear back into Americans, ones that will reinforce that there's this huge evil force out there wanting to do away with our way of life. Let's hope Americans have learned something since 9/11 and not make the same mistake twice.

- re: The Germans had been the invaders (n/t)
- I believe Raoul's point is that the Germans were no more invited into Belgium than we were invited into Iraq.
- Okay, if we're going in that direction...
- The USSR had already entered Germany from the other direction.
- That doesn't change the issue at all.
- If you wish to fight on the battlefield of history, you must deal with the facts as they are.
