"atheism
n.
1. Disbelief in or denial of the existence of God or gods.
2. The doctrine that there is no God or gods."
I agree with the above definitions.
I wouldn't call someone who did not believe in God [meaning one god], an atheist. So, for example, a Hindu shouldn't be called an atheist- the Hindu religion believes in gods, rather than God.
And I agree with this further note:
"Critique and denial of metaphysical beliefs in God or divine beings. Unlike agnosticism, which leaves open the question of whether there is a God, atheism is a positive denial."

Now some atheists may want to deny their denial. But this doesn't surprise me nor impress me.
As an agnostic I don't share the beliefs of atheists any more then I share the beliefs of say, Mormons or any other faith.
A person who is only familiar with one religion [say Christian Baptist] and rejects that God could fit the definition of an atheist. Because that person is against these ideas he/she has learned about and what that person understands as God.
Generally, it's been my experience that atheists generally have little knowledge about what they are criticizing.
Atheism is a religion because atheist share common beliefs, these beliefs may not be well thought out, they may be disorganized and generally confused, but nevertheless they generally share some stupid ideas, like organized religion is bad [almost atheists all share this belief], animals and humans share the same "rights", and people who believe in gods are not as wise and enlightened as they are. And other foolish stuff.
