"It seems to me that lots of people hold this belief that most beliefs are false." Of course not. Many people do however (including mathmaticians and logicians) believe that if one person claims that there is no rock in the box, another claims there is 1, another claims 2, and so on to infinity, then one and only one of the claimers will speak truth. (please no quantum mechanics here, we speak of logic) Contradictory propositions are a foundation of logic. If you deny them their existence then you render the concept of proof as meaningless, as well.
When you hold that there is no God but Yahweh and he created the universe, then you contradict the statement that the world has always sat on the back of a turtle. If you want to do some new-agey, all-faiths-are-really-the-same shtick then you will have to go that route without me. I don't put faith in the fact they are all the same.
I think most war and suffering can be put at the feet of one person or set of people having something that another person or set of people wanted.
