"There are many deities who garner belief. Only one of them could be real. If you expand your search over all of recorded history then only a tiny fraction of all believers could possibly have believed in the one true God (or in the one true Pantheon, or whatever).
Now if you make the assumption that the true one(s) have an urge for people to know him (else no one would know him) then you have to explain why he/she/they/it exposes the truth to some but not to all. And who/what exposed to all the counter-believers what each of them believes? Of course, this is not a deductive proof that there is no God. But it is the beginnings of an inductive proof that can suggest the probability there is no God."
Replace deity or god with "car accident".
Say, lots of people claim they saw a car accident and they all have their true account of it. The accounts are different though each person swear on a stack of bibles that their account is true. Some even say they saw two UFOs crash into each other and something about an alien who put a probe up their butt.
Now, you start by asserting the possibility that there could only be one true car accident. And that there was a purpose to this car accident. You admit that the different accounts given is not a deducted proof that no car accident occurred, but that it's the beginning of an inductive proof that can suggest the probability there is no car accident.
So you conclude:
"It seems pretty obvious that one of man's intrinsic features is the compulsion to create religion. This does not prove that all religion is false, but it does prove the possibility."
And the title of your post:" There is proof that most beliefs in a deity are false"
It seems to me that lots of people hold this belief that most beliefs are false. And faced with people who insist on holding these beliefs [which probably are false- or at least annoying] one solution to this problem has been to murder those people who insist on holding these particular beliefs [which are probably false]. Though this isn't normally considered to be "politically correct" by the more enlightened rulers. Various kinds of other oppression is also another common solution. Murder and various kinds of oppression, generally don't solve this "problem", and sometimes it just seems to encourages these moronic idiots.
This human "compulsion" has caused no end of grief for numerous rulers throughout time.
