When Kennedy made his famous speech vowing to keep his Catholicism separate from his duties as President, it was well into the general election. He was addressing what at the time was perceived as one of the few remaining obstacles in the path of victory in the general election.
Romney's making his version of the speech near the end of the primary campaign, and that makes his goals and his message very different from Kennedy's. He's not pledging to keep his religion out of the Oval Office, and in fact, using the circumlocutions that the Religious Right interprets as code, he's saying just the opposite: He's promising to make religion a central theme in his Presidency. None of that evil "wall" separating church and state for ole Mitt; his message is more like "tear down that wall!".
But Mitt-the-empty-suit's a politician, and like every Republican who's ever pandered to the Religious Right, he will betray his promises and disappoint them. But they'll keep coming back for more, year in, year out. As an atheist I'll bet you can run with the theme of the gullibility of religious fanatics...go for it!
