It's finished. The final size, BTW, is 506K. Half a megabyte of verbiage.
I don't think it was worthless at all. Flame exists to clear the air, and the air needed clearing on that subject. The simple evidence is the number of people who participated, and their persistence in participating.
The use of the charge of "treason!" over and over builds resentment among those who feel that it's directed at them (and the vagueness with which the charge is usually presented allows a lot of people to feel included). I popped the safety valve first, and I confess that there was a brief moment when I thought about whether to do it, and proceeded because I felt it had to be done. The time had come to clear the air, and not allow the resentment to grow further and explode more destructively later.
It had to be done, sooner or later. If that cost us Gary, well, I regret that, but it really was unavoidable. Letting it go on might have cost us more people later. Sometimes you can't avoid harm; in those situations, you can only try to minimize the damage.
I signed my full name to this post, not because it's an "official pronouncement", but because I've taken heed of some of the comments below about keeping straight my two voices. This is a topic that concerns "Robert Shepherd", not "Robert", even if I'm not being formal and authoritative. I'll try to be more careful about that in the future.
