Flame — HabitableZone

Flame » in reply to Battle Fatigue?

Scarred, battered, but unbowed

My bad for not mentioning this before: Based on the feedback I've read about the moderation missteps, I'll make a point of signing my official name "Robert Shepherd (moderator)". You were right about the weakness of assuming that newbies would pick up on tradition and convention. That should do it, don't you think?

It sounds like you're starting to worry about the fallout from this, and I want to reassure you that there won't be any. You're underestimating Mary Anne if you think that her being momentarily pissed off at you will lead to a grudge. She's a very generous, big-hearted person, and she's wise in the ways of people. Maybe I can't speak for her, but what I know of her tells me that you needn't worry. Same's true of me, though I wouldn't describe myself in such flowery terms. What happens on Flame stays on Flame.

You'd be underestimating me if you thought that I expected victory here. That wasn't really the point; the point was to raise the issue for a thorough (and ultimately, as it turned out, exhaustive) airing. I define victory a bit more subtly than an opponent's surrender: Victory in this case means that, in the future, any Zoner tempted to charge "treason!" will at least understand that it will provoke serious outrage. I will flame again on this topic whenever necessary.

As for Gary, of course I regret his departure. It's a bit unfair to say that I drove him off, when you consider that he ran off as soon as the first match was struck to light this flame. I hear that Gary's out there on the Net badmouthing the HabitableZone, and that bothers me. Since you consider him a friend, how about bringing him back? That'd make the Zone whole again. Since you've borne the burden of defending him alone, and passed through this flame to its end, I think Gary can slip back in without a ripple. If he cries "treason!" in the future, we'll deal with it in the future.

Don't you think it's past time to retire this flame?
