End to the Occupation

I've recently heard a good argument about why the Dems (and many Republicans) are having a hard time embracing the concept of getting us out of Iraq. The problem lies with labeling our presence in Iraq as a war. If we leave in the middle of a war the consensus is that we lost. No politician wants to be labeled as being on the losing side of a war. It's easy for political opponents to label the person a coward or quitter.

I think it's time instead for opponents of our presence in Iraq to instead embrace George Bush's codpiece-laced speech onboard the carrier as true. Major combat operations did indeed end. We won the war. What we have no is clearly an occupation and it's only natural for occupations to end. Quitting an occupation is a noble venture not a losing disgrace.

We can then all strut around with our chests out and proclaim our military the best in the world at wiping out ragtag armies. We accomplished our goal of ridding Iraq of Saddam and his idiot sons and will now step back to the sidelines and cheer on the Iraqis in their very civil war.

I think the concept has wings.
