re: End to the Occupation

"I think it's time instead for opponents of our presence in Iraq to instead embrace George Bush's codpiece-laced speech onboard the carrier as true. Major combat operations did indeed end. We won the war. What we have no is clearly an occupation and it's only natural for occupations to end. Quitting an occupation is a noble venture not a losing disgrace."

Given some more time you might yet catch up to what's going on.
The major combat operation have ended [we completed invading Iraq- and all of Saddam's armies were defeated].
And almost 2 year ago, the occupation of Iraq ended.

Currently, there is an elected govt in Iraq which is empowered by a constitution, and is recognized by most countries as the supreme sovereignty of Iraq.
Iraq with American assistance is currently applying to be member of WTO. And I wouldn't be surprised if within a year or two, Iraq applies to become a member of NATO.

Anyways it's impossible to end the occupation because that was already done :

"The US has formally handed over power in Iraq, two days ahead of schedule.

At a low-key ceremony in Baghdad, US administrator Paul Bremer transferred sovereignty to an Iraqi judge, before leaving the country by plane. "

And you are right it wasn't at all disgraceful- though perhaps not noticed by some people pre-occupied with other pressing concerns.
