Here in Florida English is fast becoming a second language. In the agency for which I work, all documents are in both Spanish and English, voice mail offers a Spanish version, and we will not hire front office help unless they are bi-lingual.
English as the official language for the US was proposed years ago, but never got up enough steam to enter into the consciousness of enough people to go anywhere. With 12 mill. illegals added to the brew such an initiative would be swimming up hill.
As Spanish becomes more and more our second language watch commercial interests re-direct their efforts from being Eurocentric to a new emphasis on marketing to Latin America. Presently, notice the anti-steroid ad that runs one time in English, and the next time in Spanish only. Merely a harbinger of things to come. This will be an interesting transition. Envision Jerrry Falwell ranting that pornography and rap music is the devil's work and will send you straight to hell, Senors and Senores. At that point, Western Civilization could probably be taught in Latin.
