To each their own Zone.

I think the Zone does die for some folks. It's all relative. For every poster who has ever left because of the tone and has not returned, to these folks the Zone is already dead. For others it is a place to spar. They leave or post less when they can't spar. For others it is a source of information and when the informative posts dry up, they frequent the boards less.

For me it a place to comment and be creative. It took all of ten to fifteen minutes to make the above post. I can alter a Google-provided image in about two minutes. The poems were easy cut and paste type alteration - which for me is truly lazy creativity. Hardly takes any time at all. Some folks make lots of little posts, I spend a bit more time than most and put my words into significantly fewer, but markedly larger, posts.

Threads like this may turn off some folks, for others it may trigger more posts. In that sense, each poster has his own zone and likes different things about it.

Obviously you have a unique relationship with it. As the code creator, it affords you both creative satisfaction and surely has prompted accelerated your own learning curve, besides providing a place for folks to talk on the internet.

The Zone will be the Phoenix bird. I'm sure there will come a time when almost all the original posters are gone, but others will take its place. Whether it shifts its venue from space to politics or emphasizes "community", the bottom line is it will still exist and you will always be its "code-father".

So don't worry about my reports of the Zone's demise. It's mostly dramatic effect to get people to think about civility, which IMHO is slowly being strangled by vulgarity, profanity & rudeness, not just in the zone, but almost everywhere.

Getting older means being able to compare the various decades and speak from personal experience, watching some things get better while other things go to seed.
